Dan Wheeler will be discussing the legal and policy ramifications of a U.S. central bank digital currency (the “digital dollar”). Does the Federal Reserve have the authority and ability to implement the digital dollar? What sort of efficiencies can be achieved by the digital dollar? What industries would be disrupted? How could the government use a digital dollar to invade privacy and control our lives? Dan will discuss why digital currencies are so appealing to governments such as China and whether effective safeguards are possible.
Dan Wheeler is a longtime banking and fintech regulatory lawyer and a past president of the SFBAA. He is a co-founder and the CEO of Sunstone Trust Company, the only new trust company formed in California in over 15 years. Prior to successfully chartering Sunstone, Dan was the general counsel of a cryptocurrency company. Before he became a full time entrepreneur, Dan was a partner at Bryan Cave and practiced law for over 20 years.
